Two times this year, devasting 500 year floods have hit the south suburbs with Calumet City being in the cross hairs. The storms were particularly intense and slow moving.
Immediately after the weather activity, local leaders called on FEMA for assistance.
In response, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has awarded a now cummulative total of $11.5 million to residents. FEMA has operated two recovery centers at the Calumet City Public Library at 660 Manistee Ave. and at the Burnham Community Center at 14020 S. Torrence Avenue in Burnham.
The agency has dedicated 200 staff members to respond to the disaster. The team has toured 6,900 homes and completed 5,200 home inspections and counting. It is estimated that 800 residents have visited the assistance centers.
Releif continues to be available. It will be in effect until January 19th. Those impacted by the flood are encouraged to apply for aid. This can be accomplished by visting DisasterAssistance.gov or calling 800-621-3362.
