Today President Donald J Trump called Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky a “dictator” in spite of the fact that Ukraine is a democracy.

Three years ago, Russia invaded Ukraine after their move to join NATO.

Trump went on to accuse Zelensky of corruption. Stemming from our support of Ukraine with billions of dollars in weapons to help resist the Russian invasion, Trump said Zelensky wants to “keep the gravy train” going. This comes just one day after Trump falsely accused Ukraine of starting the war.

Trumps commentary is absurd and dangerous.

Russia is an anti-democrary hostile force and Putin is a war criminal. As the world’s leading democracy, it is our duty to protect other democracies, hand in hand with our NATO allies.

Trump obviously does not share this long standing ideal. We are at a real peril of Trump destroying the NATO alliance and the US no longer participating.

This will cost us in terms of national security, our standing in the world, and positive economic relationships with our allies.

Trump is a profound threat and is taking us back to 1938.
