James Patton is the Alderman of Calumet City’s 6th Ward after being appointed by former Mayor Michelle Qualkinbush. He was her chief of staff during her tenure that was marked by increased spending and budget deficits year over year. Since announcing his run for mayor, residents have voiced opposition citing his lack of responsiveness to the people of the 6th ward.

On Facebook posts and in emails sent in, numerous Calumet City residents expressed their disappointment and often anger at Alderman Patton for ignoring them.

”If he can’t take care of a ward, what makes us think he can take care of a city,” said one commenter.

Mac Lewis sent via email, “I called Patton at least 4 times and he did not return my call a single time. I finally called the city directly and my issue was taken care of.”

Dr. Jorge Lunsford of the UIC political science department offered, ” Politicians who are appointed often fail to serve adequately in the role. They are usually indifferent to the needs of residents and are instead motived primarily by the interests of the elected official whom they owe a favor to.”

Patton is likely trying to avenge the loss of his former boss Qualkinbush. This would explain his running for mayor despite having performed poorly and without serving the needs of residents as alderman.

In this election, the people of Calumet City can reject the style of politics and entitlement brought by Patton by telling him no at the ballot box.
