Dolton Police Chief Lewis Lacey who is an ally of embattled Mayor Tiffany Henyard has been indicted Monday on federal bankruptcy fraud charges alleging he lied under oath in a scheme to hide assets and income from creditors to avoid paying more than $40,000 in a lawsuit settlement.

The indictment returned against Lacey includes 9 counts, alleging bankruptcy fraud, making false statements and declarations in a bankruptcy case and perjury. Prosecutors allege that Lacey made numerous false statements related to his income, including claiming that he was separated from his wife. The alleged false statements enabled Lacey to under report his income.

Gal Pissetzky, who is Lacey’s attorney, said the charges were the result of a “witch hunt” due to his association with Tiffany Henyard.

Each count in the indictment can bring a maximum sentence of 5 years in prison. As of today, an arraignment date has not been set.
